Interesting on the Luton shakedown - i had the same experience, with a twist.

The place was mobbed, the screener wouldn't let me proceed without purchasing a new bag from the slot machine (mine was tied closed rather than self sealing).

I purchased the new bags (came in a capsule of 3 if i remember correctly), whereupon i was whisked through - contents still in the old bag.

He had no interest in me using an alternative bag, only that i would pay my £1.

Can't help wondering if there are incentives for sales numbers of those bags.

I got what seemed quite like an attempt to shake me down for that £1 at Manchester Airport, justified on the grounds of security: "You have to have it in the little plastic bag otherwise we can't sniff test it properly". Well if that's true, love, then your security sucks...

Apparently, ABC News have already done some investigating involving equipment "going missing" through TSA scans in the US; take a look at http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/abc-news-tracks-missing-ipad-florida-home-tsa/story?id=17331937#.UHBoJ_l25Ld .

I prefer the night ferry between Harwich and Hoek van Holland - far less security theatre.
